SVC Foundation Scholarship Awarded to S. Novia Berriel

S. Novia obtained undergraduate dual degrees in Applied Physics and Electrical Engineering at Michigan Technological University. She then moved to the University of Central Florida, where she received a Master’s in physics in 2021 and is working on a PhD in materials science and engineering. She says, “I believe materials science is the exact intersection I’ve been looking for between application and theory.”

Her research focuses on atomic layer deposition (ALD), where she has studied the optimization of deposition processes for optical and electrical applications.

She was awarded the 2022 GEM fellowship for the GEM consortium. The fellowship allowed her to intern with Lam Research in 2022. She says, “I am grateful for that opportunity, and the internship has further invigorated me to continue my study in the field of ALD and, more broadly, vacuum science.”
